General Meeting #2

Our second General Meeting of the year will be on Wednesday 19 October 2022, with sign-ups beginning at 2pm for a 2:30pm start! The General Meetings are where we discuss and vote on our shows, elect people for empty positions, and do constitutional amendments.

This meeting will be held in-person in the Bedlam auditorium. Please note that only those who have bought membership this year will be able to vote, run and propose!

Agenda (not necessarily in order):
- Week 9 Teatime slot (Lunchtimes were renamed)
- Week 10 Freshers’ Slots (for newcomers to the society, not necessarily first years)
- Week 11 Panto
- Week 13 Nativity
- Give it a Go Week Team (week 1 Semester 2)
- Supplementaries (whenever they can fit in around the prearranged programme)
- Workshops Coordinator (https://wiki.bedlamtheatre.co.uk/en/committee/education)
- Constitutional Amendments
- Production Guidelines Ratification

If you cannot make it and you want to have someone else vote for you, please email the Secretary ([email protected]) with the name of the person voting for you (your proxy). Someone can only be a proxy for one other person.

If you want to propose, and you have any questions about what any of the proposal calls entails or how your idea best fits in, check the proposing event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/810270413502939 or get in touch with Em Leites McPherson

If you want to run for a role and would like some more information, feel free to message Mick Zijdel (president)

Also some survival tips from Matias Krook:

  • Bedlam can get cold. I mean really cold - it’s an old church and drafty in all the wrong places. You will also be sitting down for some time. Dress up warmly and bring layers (extra jumper, a coat, beanies, scarves, a nice blanket etc) to keep you warm.
  • Hot drinks and snacks are also a good idea. Warmth and good vibes.
  • Make sure your phone/laptop is somewhat charged. You’ll be using one of those to vote.

Roles on Proposals

Several shows, including some proposals for next week’s General Meeting, are still looking for team members. Have a look!

halfBaked - Backstage roles (Costume, props, and stage hands) - Week 4 We need a costume manager and a prop manager, as well as stage hands for the halfBaked show, Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band, that is on this Friday at 20.30. Will be a short time commitment, though you can stay on for future shows if you wish.

If you are interested, please email [email protected] and we will get back to you soon.

Nativity - Musical Director, Assistant Producer, Trailer Person - Week 12

We are looking for a Musical Director and an Assistant Producer for Nativity!

As Musical Director, you will be in charge of assembling the music, teaching it to the cast, rehearsing the songs with the band, and ‘directing’ the cast and band during the performance. This probably sounds more serious than it actually is, and it is a great role to do if you like music and have a low-key go at Musical Directing. You are also very welcome to play in the band yourself.

As Assistant Producer, you will help primarily with marketing, including poster design and social media posts, and with scheduling, if you are interested. There is not that much of the rest of the usual producing things to do, so it is a great first step with low time commitment.

A little impression of the madness of Nativity: Nativity 2019 (Trailer) - Nativity 2020 (Online) - Nativity 2021 (Online)

If either of these are of interest to you, please get in touch with Mick Zijdel (producer, that’s me !) on Facebook or over email at <[email protected]

Spiderman: Into the Pantoverse - Co-Producer - Week 11

I am also looking for someone to co-produce Panto with me! Panto is a good chance to work on a big show, whereas Nativity is a little bit lighter and less commitment. I am looking for someone to mainly help me on the marketing side, but I will also involve you in organising auditions, scheduling, fundraising, and budgeting. Panto is always a lot of silly fun, so do get involved!

If you are interested, please get in touch with Mick Zijdel (cpo-producer) on Facebook or over email at [email protected]

halfBaked Presents: Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band

A mysterious death happens. Dr Watson is called to the scene. Will Sherlock find out who did it? First performed in 1910, this original script by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself returns to the stage! Considered by the author himself to be his finest story, find out how adventure of greed, secrecy, and freedom reaches its climax at the home of the mysterious Dr. Grimesby Rylott.

As a halfBaked production, cake will be provided to all patrons. Dietary infomation will be displayed. This performance shall be conducted with minimal rehearsal time.

Tickets: 4/3/2 pounds (with free cake!)

Performance: The Improverts

Edinburgh’s longest running improv troupe are back for another year! After a successful run at the 2022 Fringe and a great year performing at Assembly Roxy, the Imps can’t wait to get back on stage and have some fun back in Bedlam. Join them every Friday at 22:30 for an hour of short form improv, as always based entirely on audience suggestions.

With new players and new games, shows are always different, always funny! We can’t wait for you to come and have a laugh with The Improverts and celebrate another year of critically acclaimed improv!

Tickets: 8/5/4 pounds. Buy them here.

Getting Involved

Here’s another quick rundown of ways to get involved! I heard that several people missed it in last week’s rather long email.

  • Wait for the next round of our auditions after the General Meeting in week 5.
  • Wait for the next hallfBaked production.

Tech and Backstage

  • Improverts Tech Workshop every Friday at 9pm in Bedlam. Tech the show after! Check out the Facebook Group for more info.
  • Look out for call-outs for tech and backstage assistants or team members in Bedlam Techies! and Bedlam Theatre {EUTC} 2022/2023.
  • Starting this weekend we will start with open get-ins as well where everyone (no experience needed) can help build the set and rig the lights. More details will be posted in the Bedlam Techies! Other Production Team Roles (Directing, Producing, etc)

Maintenance and DM Training

This Sunday 12:00 to 14:00 we do Maintenance where tidy up the building and do small building improvements. Everyone is welcome to help, and we will provide you with snacks and a good playlist.

After Maintenance at 14:00 to 14:30 we have Duty Management (DM) Training. We will teach you how to run the building during a show, open the building, lock up the building, and what to do in case of a fire. There always needs to be at least one DM trained person present when the building is in use, so being DM Trained is very helpful for Production Team members, or if you are just interested in seeing how it works.
