Hello!

I hope you’ve all had an amazing Summer! Whether you spent your time visiting home, seeing friends, working, traveling, or participating in the Fringe festival, I hope you’ve enjoyed yourselves and had time to recharge as we gear up for another semester. The EUTC is very excited to have you all back and fill your schedules once again with incredible programming! Coming up, we have Welcome Week activities, Freshers’ Plays, and our first GM of the year. At this General Meeting, we will be voting on show proposals, as well as electing a welfare contact and liberation representatives. If you are interested in any of these positions, please seek further information about their responsibilities on our website. Proposals are open for our Week 8 Mainterm, Week 7 & 9 Teatimes, Week 10 Freshers’ Slots Team, Week 11 Bedlam Pantomime, and Supplementaries. For a guide on how to propose a show, please visit the Bedlam website or Instagram. Auditions are also happening this week for our Week 4 Mainterm Production of Antigone and our Week 6 Mainterm production of Little Women. The audition packs can be found on the Bedlam Facebook and Instagram page. Finally, we have Imps shows, a Taskmaster fundraiser, and a halfBaked. Have a good week!

Upcoming Events

Welcome Week

Mon, 8 Sep. - Sun, 14 Sep.

This week, Bedlam will be hosting daily Welcome Week programming in the theatre. This includes events such as theatre tours, tech workshops, introductions to various theatre societies, and fun socials like pub quizzes. Please follow this link and search “Bedlam” to see our full list of events.

Freshers’ Families/Plays/Scav Hunt

Sun, 14 Sep. - Sat, 27 Sep.

Spanning Week 1 and 2 of the semester, Bedlam will be hosting an event where “Freshers’ Families” are formed. The “parents” are returning Bedlam members who get paired up with “children”, who are new members to the theatre. This year, families will work together for two weeks to each create and rehearse a 10-minute, “dream” themed play to be performed in our Freshers’ Plays showcase. This final show culminates in a competitive overnight scavenger hunt through the city. Sign-ups to be a “child” will be held during Welcome Week on this form. Tickets to the Freshers’ Play showcases will soon be available on the Bedlam website.

Edinburgh’s longest running improv troupe are back for another year of fast-paced, ferociously funny FIVE STAR improvised sketch comedy, based ENTIRELY on audience suggestions. Taskmaster: An Endgame Fundraiser

Tuesday, 09 September

It’s Freshers Week, and what better way to start the semester than with some welcome-back madness in Bedlam’s own version of the hit show: Taskmaster! And even better - ticket sales will help fund our week 3 teatime production of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Endgame’. Watch our esteemed director, Bella Burgess, put the unfortunate contestants through a gruelling series of challenges that will leave you in stitches! With the help of our esteemed ‘little’ James Harvey, enjoy a night of laughs, gasps, confusion and some classical Beckettian absurdity (as well as some nods to our show). See you there!

Tickets

halfBaked: Secondary School Musical

Thursday, 11 September

Groy and Tabriella are two secondary school students who could not be more different. But when they secretly audition together for the school musical, everyone realises it might be cool to do musicals! Join us for a theatre kid’s wet dream as we kick off this year with a slam dunk. In true halfBaked style, not all performers will be off book, and there will be (fully) baked goods provided with every ticket, so BYOB, and get ready for a reasonably good time!

Maintenance and Staffing

The EUTC maintains and runs Bedlam Theatre through volunteer work. By participating in a production here, you are required to give back by filling staffing slots and helping at maintenance sessions. These obligations are sometimes referred to as your “debt” to the theatre. You can log into your account on the Bedlam website to see if you have maintenance or staffing debt and sign up for a session to fulfill it. There are instructions on the website, and people to help you in the building, so don’t worry if you’re new to any of the tasks! You can clear maintenance debt by coming to a Maintenance Session (every Sunday, 12:00-14:00) or by talking to Maysan Abdidayim or Morgan Hazelip (Theatre Managers) at [email protected]. Likewise, you can contact Uppie Shah or Elise Chan (Front of House Managers) at [email protected] if you have any questions about staffing. You can sign up for your staffing slot here. Thanks for the help!

Welfare

For Bedlam-related welfare issues: [email protected]

Show-specific welfare reps: check your proposal or ask your producer if you’re not sure who that is! What we can help with: - Disagreements about show-related issues - Safety and well-being concerns on shows - Scheduling conflicts you’re not sure how to handle - Pretty much anything else related to a Bedlam show or the society itself!

Other welfare resources to keep on hand: For mental health concerns or non-theatre related issues, please reach out to the Edinburgh Student Wellbeing service or make an appointment with Edinburgh’s Student Counseling Service.
