EUTC Week 5 Newsletter

Sunday 12 October 2025 at 12:30 by Lauryn McGuire

Hello!

Congratulations to the Antigone show team for a successful, sold-out run! We have several exciting shows and events in the theatre this week, such as the Little Women show team’s Four Sisters’ Fundraiser, “WHAT IF it’s our first time…?” drag show, the staged reading of Read The Room, and, as always, our Improverts show! Additionally, our Freshers’ Slots proposals are still open until the 17th and our show proposals are open until the 20th for our second General Meeting! The Bedlam Committee also wants to make our members aware that in our company meeting on Monday, we will be holding a company vote to decide on whether EUTC will join the Student Coalition for Palestine. I will touch on this more below, so please keep reading!

Bedlam Committee Holds a Company Vote on Joining The Student Coalition for Palestine

A message from our Vice President, Andrew: We want to make everyone aware that during our company meeting on Monday 13th October at 6pm, we will be holding a company vote to decide on whether EUTC will join the Student Coalition for Palestine, following which the EUTC will release a statement stating that we stand with the Edinburgh University Justice for Palestine society, that we acknowledge the University’s condemnation of the protests, and that we will be making an effort to fundraise for families in Gaza alongside other societies in the Student Coalition for Palestine. There will be an open discussion period before this vote, where anyone can raise any questions or suggestions, and then the vote will take place. We believe that everyone’s vote is important, so please come along if you want your say!

Freshers’ Slot Proposals

What are Fresher’s Slots? Freshers slots are designated show slots in week 10 reserved for those new to the society to put on a show with a bit of extra support from the Fresher’s Slots team and committee! The point is to get new people involved in the society, through a fully supported process, making it beginner friendly. We are aiming to have 2-3 separate shows (depending on the number of proposals we get), in week 10 (17th-23rd of November). Each show will get one night. Propose here: (https://forms.office.com/e/QxtmqHXeLN)[https://forms.office.com/e/QxtmqHXeLN] Submission deadline: 17th of October A good starting point for finding a team (Director, Producer, Stage Manager, Tech Manager) is to look into your Freshers Families, and to post into this FB group (or Bedlam Techies! group). Reach out if you have any questions!

WHAT IF It’s Our First Time…?

8:00-10:00pm, Thursday 16 October 2025

It’s timeeeeeeee… for our first time at ‘What If…?’!!! Come along to a night of firsts, and of reminiscing on your firsts! You will definitely remember your first time at our show…

We are starting this show because we want to make a drag space in Edinburgh that has a focus on creative experimentation and on nurturing new performers. Drag is meant to be fun, creative, pushing boundaries and most importantly, it is for everyone. ‘What If…?’ will (hopefully) be a monthly show, always themed, always fun and refreshing, so come on down for our first one.

‘What if it’s our first time?’ will be hosted by Narcisse Empoté-Ose and Qualia Deskunt, starring the artistic stylings of Max Hetero, Jay Gnormous and Bea52!

There will also be an opportunity for YOU to strut your stuff onstage in an audience lip sync - keep an eye out on our instagram for the song, and make sure you learn those words if you want to win a very special prize! (Audience lip sync participation will be on a completely voluntary basis).

‘What If…?’ will take place in Bedlam Theatre in Edinburgh, on Thursday, October 16th. Doors open at 7:30pm, with performances from 8pm-10pm. Tickets are £5 for students ahead of time, £6 for students 0TD (you will be asked to show valid student ID). General entry is £7 ahead of time and £8 OTD.

WHAT IF is a strictly 18+ event, so make sure to bring your ID. There is an accessibility post on our Instagram (@whatifitsadragshow), but you can also visit Bedlam Theatre’s website.

Staged Reading: Read The Room

7:30 pm Friday 17th, October

One evening. Two original plays by local playwrights performed as a staged reading. An opportunity to see and support these works at the beginning of their development!

‘Gatekeepers’, by Rose Sarafilovic: In this sci-fi piece, the Moreman Station, a stargate between two worlds, has suffered a massive catastrophe. The survivors must band together to survive it.

‘Crawl’, by Till Schindler: Temple and Brandt are attempting to fix a chandelier in one room of their flat while a party happens in the remainder of the flat. Attempting the repairs through bouts of darkness and visits from their “Friend” Private Man, it does not go as smoothly as they may have hoped.

Maintenance and Staffing

Every Sunday 12:00 to 14:00, we do theatre maintenance where we tidy up the building and make improvements. Bedlam runs on volunteer help, so you will be asked to attend one of these sessions if you have worked on a show in the theatre. Similarly, you will be required to help staff a show (or two if you did a mainterm) in exchange for the members who helped staff your show. You can log into your account on the Bedlam website to see if you have maintenance or staffing debt and sign up for a session to fulfill that. There are instructions on the website and people to help you in the building, so don’t worry if you’re new to any of the tasks! You can clear maintenance debt by coming to a Maintenance Session or talking to Maysan Abdidayim or Morgan Hazelip (Theatre Managers) at [email protected]. Likewise, you can contact Uppie Shah or Elise Chan (Front of House Managers) at [email protected] if you have any questions about staffing. You can sign up for your staffing slot here. Thanks for the help!

Welfare

For Bedlam-related welfare issues: [email protected]

Show-specific welfare reps: Check your proposal or ask your producer if you’re not sure who that is!

What we can help with: - Disagreements about show-related issues - Safety and well-being concerns on shows - Scheduling conflicts you’re not sure how to handle - Pretty much anything else related to a Bedlam show or the society itself!

Other welfare resources to keep on hand: For mental health concerns or non-theatre related issues, please reach out to the Edinburgh Student Wellbeing service or make an appointment with Edinburgh’s Student Counseling Service.
