Summary

Remarkably, over 75% of participants came without a production, including two people benefiting from inaugural Midland Bank bursaries for disabled students. Fourteen selected shows, including a well choreographed Guys and Dolls (winning Mo Brindley the first-ever award for a producer), plus a guest production of Ken Campbell’s Pidgin Makbed, from LAMDA. The Arden theatre School, Huddersfield University, Halifax School of Integrated Arts and Gorseinon College made their NSDF debuts. LIPA brought three shows, including The Storyteller, which the NSTC took t Edinburgh with Outstanding Production and Sunday Times Playwriting Award winner Stand (newcomer Northampton College). Mark Bowden Chaired the all-important discussions: John Godber, Robert Hewison and Cathy Tyson judged. The excellent workshops programme included newcomers Annabel Arden (Theatre de Complicite), designer Jessica Curtis, Claire Grove (BBC Radio Drama producer) and Jamie Nuttgens (producer of The Bill)as well as familiar faces Stephen Jeffreys, Timothy West and John Wright. Another fine crop of Noises Offs co-edited by Gaie Sebold, sadly retiring from the newsmag after fourteen years of dedicated service.
