If you are able to provide any more information, please contact the Archivist.
From a record 133 shows submitted, 16 shows were selected, including two first timers: Blackpool and The Fylde Colege, and Brunel University (Technical Award). LIPA’s four selected productions equalled Bretton Hall’s record for productions selected from one place. In a reversal of recent trend towards shorter plays and devised work, there were three large-scale, large-cast, scripted hows (two from Bristol University). Amy Rosenthal (Birmingham University) won the Sunday Times playwriting award for Henna Night. Excellent physical theatre frm Bretton, high quality devising and execution from Lancaster University, fine acting from Cambridge and Bristol, impressive musical ensemble work by LIPA and Brunel’s very effective design all won awards from the judges: Annie Castledine, Emma Fielding and Robert Hewison. London’s Bush Theatre, led by Mike Bradwell, was the first resident professional company since 1977. Inspirational workshops and talks from Simon McBurney (Theatre de Complicite), Henry Godman and John Godber. Outstanding actors and others who impressed the Selectors in shows not finally selected for Scarborough were auditioned or interviewed there, and made up almost the entire company of the NSTC’s subsequent Edinburgh production Desperate Remedies.
