Dealing With Clair is set in Thatcherite Britain, amidst the property boom and the rise of the yuppie. The story is partly fictional, and partly based on the case of Suzy Hamplugh, an estate agent who went missing after taking a client on a viewing in 1986. Vendors Luke and Liz begin by stating their determination to settle for the first decent offer for their house, but gradually veer round to justify their gazumping a disabled buyer with lacquer-thin and transparent abrogations of ‘moral responsibility’. The play is at once satirical and disturbing. Crimp uses banal, hollow language to escape the horrors that lie just beneath the civilized surface of our lives.
