Despite various pieces of paper from Edinburgh University proclaiming periods of matriculated and graduate studentship, my first introduction to the Bedlam was as a member of a visiting amateur company, acting as their A.S.M. ( which I have translated as Apprentice Sado-Masochist ever since…)
The Mercators Drama Club of Edinburgh had chosen to present John Bowen’s “The Fall and Redemption of Man “ during Easter Week of 1985. Bowen’s adaptation of the Chester and York Mystery cycles into modern English is a wonderful text for actors, and the production presented by the Mercators represented the most ambitious project they had undertaken up to that point, and was certainly one of their most successful productions. The company even managed to impress the ubiquitous hallkeepers, including the particularly ubiquitous, but very helpful Stefan Jansen, so presumably we managed to do something right!
