Joan witnesses her uncle offloading people from a truck and killing them in his shed. Her Aunt does her best to cover this up by feeding her even more tenuous and imaginative lies. The result of this is that Joan learns how to accept the brutality that she lives with. Years later she finds herself working for a novelty hat company which concerns itself with a very dark task. Her blindness to the real world shows through as she continues to excel at work despite her sinister cause. Caryl Churchill writes in a fast-moving and easy to interpret style, creating a very powerful short play.
