The play concerns the plight of a man who, on his way to a wedding, is suddenly entranced by an ancient sailor, who regales him with the story of their doomed voyage and the fantastical events that transpired. The show is heavily dependent on lights and sound to create the ambience of each scene, and the story is recited by both the principal characters and the ensemble of sailors who experience what the Mariner did. The intentions and veracity of the Mariner’s tale is always in question, as he is an unpredictable storyteller and unreliable witness. The Wedding-Guest survives all the hardship that the Mariner did, and having journeyed to the edges of human experience, returns to his home a sadder and wiser man.
