A “speechpiece”, by the Austrian playwright Peter Handke, which is based upon the historical case of an autistic adolescent named Kaspar Hauser, and is an attack on the way language is used by a corrupt society to depersonalise the individual. The play is a dynamic dramatisation of human psychology and deals deftly and subtly with depersonalisation’s causes and its mournful effects.
