Noises Off guides the audience through a production of a traditional English sex farce, Nothing On. In act one we cringe at the disastrous last minute dress rehearsal taking place a matter of hours before the show opens. After the interval the situation has been reversed, we are now watching the chaos from behind the scenes. Whilst the action continues onstage we see the soap like relationships between the actors emerge amidst a volley of door slamming and slapstick violence.
In the final act we laugh so hard we dribble milk from out noses and get stabbing pains in our guts. The actors desperately ad lib to try and keep the play on course, but the result is just the opposite. The play ends with the director, stage manager and prompter all coming on in a doomed attempt to rescue the catastrophic performance.
Noises Off is a play about theatre, sex and sardines; a worryingly accurate portrayal of the banter and shenanigans of bedlam life.
