John Merrick is a grotesquelly deformed freak show attraction. Abandoned and helpless he is discovered by the talented young doctor, Treves, who believes he can make Merrick a man as any other. But his dream is a dream never to be realised.
Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man tells the true story of the Victorian side-show freak, John Merrick, adapted from his doctor’s case notes. The play opened to critical acclaim, winning all the major drama awards, including three Tonys, three Obies, the Drama Desk Award, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.
