‘Theatre Uncut: Bedlam’ is part of a national theatrical debate in reaction to the governmental funding cuts proposed by the coalition. The main event is occurring on 16th - 19th March at Southwark Playhouse. The whole event, including the Southwark Playhouse events and the organising of student and youth groups across the nation, is being spearheaded by the London based theatre companies Reclaim and Meeting Point Productions. Reclaim’s Hannah Price says, ʻTheatre Uncut is a theatrical response to the cuts outlined by the coalition in October. These cuts are the turning point of a generation, undermining the welfare state, state higher education and the arts in one fell swoop.ʼ
Bedlam Theatre’s involvement with this project will involve the staging of all seven plays that were specially commissioned for this event, as well as live music, comedy and poetry acts throughout the day ending with a debate on the issues covered lead by Bedlam Members, open to all. The cafe will also provide access to the online Theatre Uncut forum where professionals will be ready to answer questions and audience members and students across the nation will post comments and reactions to the days events.
